APPRENTICE CARPENTER


SCHEDULED DAYS/HOURS: Monday-Friday, 7:30 AM - 4:00 PM

REPORTS TO: Master Carpenter

SALARY: Based on experience


GENERAL SUMMARY: Possesses work site experience and basic knowledge of construction, including level, plumb & square, with a higher understanding and expectation of quality workmanship. Demonstrates work site etiquette and professional conduct on the project and in front of customers and vendors. Ready to begin learning the specifics of the craft, invest in their hand tools, and demonstrate an increase in abilities.


RESPONSIBILITIES:


SKILL LEVEL

  • Loading a truck/trailer
  • Stacking materials
  • Proper rolling of extension cords
  • Clean-up of the job site
  • Setting up a ladder
  • Jackhammering
  • Digging
  • Handling materials
  • Demolition
  • Setting up/taking down scaffolding
  • Installing insulation
  • Organize assigned tasks for completion alone or with supervision
  • Present alternative solutions to unforeseen obstacles and building conditions to the Master Carpenter or Project Manager
  • Load dumpsters efficiently
  • Maintain a clean and neat job site
  • Assist in basic nailing of materials
  • Assist other carpenters with more complicated tasks
  • Learn tool and material terminology

BASIC TOOL KNOW-HOW:

  • Hand tools
  • Drill, saw, Sawzall, and miter box
  • Compound miter saw
  • Read measuring tape

CONSTRUCTION TASKS:

  • Learn how to install aluminum, wood, or fiber cement exterior cladding
  • Learn basic framing techniques and components
  • Cut & install drywall
  • Install soffit, fascia, and exterior trim components
  • Install sheathing, roof decking, and subfloors
  • Cut and install basic interior trim, including base, door/window casing, and quarter round
  • Learn to assist with cabinet installation and crown mold details
  • Learn and assist in door and window installation
  • Prep wood for finishing (fill nail holes, caulk, sand)
  • Prevent hazardous and unsafe working conditions
  • Follow instructions for basic carpenter tasks

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Must be able to talk, hear, stand, walk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, reach with hands and arms, and use hands to grasp, handle, and/or feel
  • Endure exposure to outdoor weather conditions and possible extreme temperatures, loud noise, fumes, and moving machinery
  • Must be able to lift 80+ pounds, with or without assistance


STANDARDS:


POSITION SPECIFIC

  • Review Task Lists in JobTread and check off the items upon completion
  • Complete work within the estimated labor hours
  • Add or comment on a daily log of work performed at the job site, summarizing what was accomplished and adding photos when available
  • Create a material list before the end of the workday and submit it to the Project Manager, when appropriate
  • Be accepting of continuous changes that will occur as the company grows and develops in the form of project type, project location, and the development of new company systems
